Inadmissible questions to applicants

To find out whether the applicant is a good fit for the job, recruiters naturally have to ask a lot of questions. But there are also questions that should not be asked in a job interview - and yet they are sometimes asked.

In principle, the following are not permitted...

  • Questions about the marriage
  • Questions about family planning or an existing pregnancy
  • Questions about sexual orientation
  • Questions about assets
  • Questions about ethnic origin
  • Questions about your state of health
  • Questions about religious or party affiliation
  • Questions about previous convictions

Whether a question is permissible or impermissible depends on whether the employer has a legitimate interest in the information. However, the boundaries can become blurred here, as there are also questions that are permissible to a certain extent if the information is absolutely relevant to the job.

Example: The question of previous convictions for professional drivers. Why? Because recruiters have to include information about possible traffic offenses in their decision.

However, an inadmissible question does not have to be answered. You can set a limit here and point out that the question is inadmissible. However, remain objective and calm.
